ZHS will be "smallish" this year, with Prati graduated and no "big" players. My guess at a starting lineup would be Raheem Forman (3),
Tanner Gibson (1/2), Cole Carpenter (2/1), Allen Harris (4) and Devin Jones (5). They should be solid. There is always the chance that someone steps out of the
shadows and becomes a factor, too -- this has happened many times in the ZHS program. Now, the bigger question will be who comes off the bench. Indications are
that Kurt Young will not play his senior year, so that's at least one experienced guard not in the mix. Noah Baldwin's knee injury might preclude him
playing at all this season, maybe the second half at the most. We'll see. Cory Harris is a freakish athlete, but his basketball skills are still very raw.
Jordan Bouterse could step up and provide ZHS with a solid shooter off the bench. Josh Barker, a 6-3 junior, may have improved enough to provide some minutes,
too. Of the sophomores, I'm thinking Kade Haddox might be in the mix.
Scott usually doesn't go too deep into his bench, but they're still going to need some effective contributions from whoever he turns to. Looking forward to seeing who might "step up." |

The Zanesville program is to good to let any MVL team beat them. No matter how good the players are, they always make up for it with hustle and fundamentals. I
enjoy watching Zanesville Bascketball. It is sad that they won't be in that gym for much longer.....so much history there.

My perception, based on watching Tri-Valley and Dresden basketball starting back into the mid-1960s, is that the school/area continues to be a marvelous
basketball hotbed. I'll definitely catch some of those match-ups with the Blue Devils.

STD 45 ... Not sure who the last MVL school was to beat ZHS, but then again, we really haven't played an MVL school in season for more than a decade.
Also, since both of our teams have dropped into Division II (girls for the first time), there will be no post-season tournament games in Winland (unless someone gets goofy and sends some lower-division games there). In many ways (current parking situation), it's probably a good thing. But it also means that the last game played in that gym will be played by a Zanesville team (Saturday, Feb. 20, with Hilliard Davidson). There is talk that the new ZHS will not open on time for the 2010-11 school year due to some major delays due to excavation last winter/spring, but we do not expect to play any further basketball games in the gym for that year's basketball season. Winland is what it is -- hot, low-slung ceiling, weird-ish configuration. But I'm going to miss that place because it has character. Maybe not like The Pit, but it does have its own character. And characters, too, I might add. |

I remember a Tri-Valley team, led by Charlie Sidwell that beat a highly rated (and undefeated) Z-ville team in 1970!

My dad talks about that game, he claims Charlie Sidwell is the best player he has ever seen in the MVL. I think this will be a little better game then some
anticipate but TV will have no answer for Tanner Gibson, IMO. If teams in our area are going to beat zanesville they'd better get it done this year cuz
they have some great classes coming again.

Sister was a cheerleader for that 70's team. I hated the fact that they had to play Steubenville on their home court! That was tryly a great team!

Zanes/STD - my best guess is the last MVL team to beat Zanesville was West Muskingum in 90 or 91 (the McLoughlin, Bell, etc teams). They had a running series
for about 7 or 8 years in the late 80's to early 90's during the early part of Aronholt's tenure.
bludevil90 - careful what you ask for. Some relative of knight's might try to crash the party! |

I had time to dig out the big notebook, which goes to the 2000-01 season (I'm pretty sure no MVL team has played us in the regular season since then, and
the playoff loss to RV a few years back was after they had left for the ECOL).
I'll work backwards ... 2000-01 - ZHS 71, Philo 58 (TipOff Classic, Game 1) 1999-2000 -- ZHS 73, Philo 33 (Tipoff Classic, Game 2) 1996-97 -- ZHS 58, Tri-Valley 37 (Division I East District semifinal [1st game]); ZHS 58, John Glenn 27 (Tipoff Classic Game 2) 1995-96 -- ZHS 61, Maysville 33 (Game 10); ZHS 83, John Glenn 24 (Tipoff Classic, Game 1) 1994-95 -- ZHS 67, Maysville 43 (Game 9; STATE TITLE SEASON) 1991-92 -- ZHS 48, Tri-Valley 42 (Game 15); ZHS 91, West Muskingum 65 (Game 3) 1990-91 -- Tri-Valley 65, ZHS 60 (Game 17); West Muskingum 95, ZHS 63 (Game 1) That was Scott's first season at ZHS, and the Devils were 7-14. WM also thumped ZHS 81-53 the previous year, the last under the late Lee Himmenger. In fact, West also won the season-opener in 1988-89, which means that the Tornadoes had a 3-game winning streak on ZHS and the MVL won four straight at that time. tropical breeze -- Tri-Valley 71, ZHS 60 in the second game of the sectional that year. ZHS was 17-1 coming into that game, only losing to Newark during the regular season. |

I recall we played Philo in the D2 tournament the second or so year we were down from D1. That might be the last time we played an MVL team.
Got to get that notebook updated! |

1990-91 -- Tri-Valley 65, ZHS 60 (Game 17); West Muskingum 95, ZHS 63 (Game 1)
I wonder how many points T-Mac had for West that night? "If practice makes perfect, and no one is perfect, why
practice?" |

Probably have to dig out the microfilm on that one. But 95 team points certainly portends to a big night ... though let's also remember he was a very
unselfish player. According to the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Web site, he still ranks ninth all time in career assists (605; 1988-91).
Only Doug Etzler (732), who played during the same time period at Convoy Crestview, had more when Todd's HS playing career ended. So, I guess I'm
saying that Todd might have had a solid scoring night against the Devils that night, but I would bet it wasn't "off the hook."
Does anyone remember, or do I have to go to the library? |

I believe it was his career high that night. 38 sticks in my mind, however that might be off by a point or two. It had to be less than 45, the single game
school record and he does not hold that - shared by Steve Mitchell and Darin Miller, both before the 3 point line!
Jeez, you guys are digging deep into the cobwebs here! |
